The Governor at Work
The Governor of Virginia is an extremely busy person! As Virginia's
top elected official, the Governor:
- travels the state and the nation presenting ideas and initiatives,
giving speeches, and interacting with Virginia citizens;
- acts as "CEO" of the entire Executive branch of state
government;
- proposes an annual budget for state government, as well as other
laws and policies;
- serves as a political party leader, unifying party elements
and supporting others within the same party.
Virginia's governor can suggest law, veto any law passed by the
General Assembly, and make war or peace as Virginia's supreme representative.
Virginia is the only state in the nation where the governor cannot
serve more than one consecutive term. [However, a governor can serve
non-consecutive terms; for instance, Mills Godwin was first Governor
as a Democrat from 1966-70 and again as a Republican from 1974-78.]
